and cbs news business analyst jill schlesinger joins us live from new york with the results. good morning to you, jill. so what did the march data show? >> reporter: yeah, hot is not in good hot way. you know? and so we saw prices accelerate in the month of march and the consumer price index, the overall rate was up by 3.5% from a year ago. that is higher than the february reading when we saw the cpi was up just # .2%. higher energy and shelter prices is behind it. specifically energy, gas prices were up by 6.4% just during the month alone. the core rate strips out food and energy. that did remain at 3.8% from a year ago but still, the rate of increase remains way higher than the fed would like. >> jill, every time i go to the grocery store, i look at the receipt and i wonder how can this be? so what is happening with the prices at the grocery stores? are they budging at all? >> reporter: when you looked at the march report, and i dug in a little bit. we saw six categories in the food aisles that were down but you are not crazy because prices overall at the grocery store are

cbs news business analyst jill schlesinger joins us from new york to discuss what it all means. so jill, good morning to you. what were those march results? >> reporter: we saw 303,000 new jobs in the month of march and as you said, better than expected. we were thinking probably aaround 200,000. the unemployment rate just ticked down slightly to 3.8% from 3.9% but i have to emphasize this is the 9th straight month that we've seen job creation and the labor market really does seem to be in very good shape despite fears that it would roll over this year. >> jill, what about wages? did they outpace inflation? >> reporter: they did. and they were up 4.1% on average from a year ago. that's ahead of the 3.2% annual increase in the consumer price index i also want point out that there's a lot of evidence we've seen the strongest wage growth at the bottom of the distribution of earners. so this is research from the economic policy institute for the four years between 2019 and 2023 wages for the bottom 10% of earners grew by 12.1%. and i just got to be clear, gang, this is inflation adj
